The lead session titled, ‘Restructuring the entertainment industry as ‘last hope’ for Africa’s largest economy’ will take a holistic view at the critical measures that must be championed through entertainment to boost the continent’s economic development, in particular Nigeria.

Sonnie Ayere in his reaction to the invitation for the conference affirms “the creative and entertainment sector contributed c.₦1.35trillion to Nigeria’s GDP in 2015 which is quite remarkable. With increased market visibility, recognition and awareness about the growth prospects of the industry, the interest of individual investors and groups to invest in entertainers and their services continues to grow”.

“Today, virtually all segments of the entertainment industry have grown into multi-billion dollar businesses. The role of the industry has also increasingly become important in terms of employment generation and poverty alleviation” Ayere concludes.

Given the weak economic outlook induced by softening oil prices, the possibility of further contraction in Nigeria’s domestic conditions are major concerns for economic growth in the short term. Nonetheless, research by Dunn Loren Merrifield team highlights that the Nigerian growth story has proven that most economic sectors have the ability to spur the nation’s developmental process if harnessed with emphasis on agriculture, solid minerals and the entertainment industry among others.

The Nigerian Entertainment Conference #NECLive debuted in 2013 as an umbrella conference for the entertainment industry in Nigeria, continually discussing trajectory development and inclusion of dynamic practices shaping the sector.

Speakers joining Sonnie Ayere at #NECLive4 are Managing Director, Multichoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, Award winning actress and producer, Funke Akindele, Entrepreneur & global recording artiste, Dbanj, CEO at EME Records and singer, Bankole ‘Banky W’ Wellington, Managing Director, Terra Kulture, Bolanle Austen-Peters, Commissioner of Information at Ogun State, Dayo Adeneye among other high level panellists.
